The base Torino is equipped with a recirculating ball
steering box, and both cars came from the factory with power
steering. The boxes are notable for wearing over the years
to the point that there is 5-10% of play in the wheel while
driving - not exactly the responsiveness we are looking for.
The first though was to get an aftermarket kit from someone like
RRS, but after pricing one of the kits, the goal quickly changed
to making our own setup.
Since the
plan is to run SVT Cobra components, it is only natural to
retain these components in the mix. This offers several
advantages - bolts right up to the K member, maintains all of
the Cobra's suspension points, and it much lighter than the cast
iron pieces. On top of this, the parts are cheap as you
can see below, and will also integrate into the Hydroboost
system. Roush eccentric steering rack mount bushings will
be used, since the car will sit lower than a stock Mustang
Cobra.
We are going to have to make up a custom
intermediate shaft, and likely several other pieces by the time
we are done. |

7/15/09 - The steering will be a cross between a 1968 column and 2004 Mustang. The column needs to be shortened to clear the pedels like on a Mustang, and also to line up with the rest of the system correctly and clear the headers. Beleive it or the column shaft on both are exactly the same. They use a 3/4 double d spec. This way it will require very little mods to get the universal joint to work with it. We will also use the steady bearing at the end like a Mustang. Just need to fab up a collar. I sacraficed the stock column shoft for now.. as I will eventually be using a floor shift column.
Steering rack for the Texas Torino is off a 2004 Cobra/Mach
1, which has a quicker ratio than all the other Mustang
configurations.
