The reasoning behind the rear brakes is the same as the
fronts. Out with the old (drum) and in with the new
(disc). The donor for these will be an SVT Cobra as they already come on an IRS.
Both Torinos will be be run hard at the racetrack during on track events. Because of that, we will be running heavy duty braking systems that will handle the greater amount of heat and stopping power that is required during such events.
Both cars are equipped with Roush/Alcon rear rotors and mounting brackets. Stock 2004 Cobra rear calipers and brackets are used with this kit. Carbotech street track pads are used. The Alcon calipers are 4 piston in design and use street/track pads. The stock rubber flex hoses are replaced with stainless steel Goodridge lines to give a firmer pedal all around. We decided to replace the 11.65" Cobra rotors with the much larger Alcon 13" rotors. These are directional units with internal cooling vents and have slots on the front and rear faces to help gasses generated during braking to escape easier. The Alcon kit was desiged to work with a stock GT rear axle and not for the IRS equipped cars. Custom adapter brackets
As with the front system, the brakes use hydraulic braking assistance though an SVT Cobra Hydroboost
system and also run through the stock Cobra ABS braking system. A Cobra master cylinder is also used. A Wilwood adjustable proportioning valve will be used to keep things in balance front to rear since the weight distribution of the Torino is different than a 2004 Mustang. ATE performance DOT4 brake fluid is used.
